Charles Johnson Jr Scholarship

Through the Welfare Fund, the NYCDCC offers the Charles Johnson Jr. Scholarship Program to unmarried, dependent, natural, or adopted children of eligible members.

These children are referred to collectively as “Qualifying Children” for the purposes of the Scholarship Program, which is administered by International Scholarship and Tuition Services (ISTS).

Who is Eligible for this Charles Johnson Jr Scholarship?

This benefit is a scholarship program for unmarried, dependent, natural or legally adopted children of any age who meet the following criteria:

  • Those who are entering college as freshmen without prior college credit;
  • Those who are entering college with prior college credit earned while completing high school (in an early admissions placement program or advanced placement program); or
  • Those who are mid-year graduates who entered college prior to the academic year beginning in September, when a scholarship would first be payable, and who earned one-half year of college credit.

Your eligible children are eligible for this program if you met the scholarship eligibility standards outlined above at the time of your retirement.

How Much Does this Scholarship Provide?

Charles Johnson Jr. Memorial Scholarship Program provides up to $3,500 per year of a four-year academic program at an authorized college or university or until the recipient obtains a bachelor’s degree, whichever comes first.

The maximum grant amount per student is $14,000. Currently, 25 students are awarded scholarships; however, this number is subject to change at the Board of Trustees’ discretion.

The Scholarship Program does not include postgraduate work.

You must ensure to notify the ISTS of any additional financial help (e.g., awards, grants, loans) obtained by your child. ISTS adjusts the scholarship so that the sum of financial aid and the award does not exceed the total cost of tuition, room and board, and standard fees.

However, New York State Regents awards are not taken into account.
