Takitani Scholarship
The Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization that awards scholarships to Hawaii students. They also support youth education programs in the Hawaiian Islands.
The world recognizes Mamoru and Aiko Takitani as the founders of Hawaiian Host. Hawaiian students recognize them for their philanthropic efforts. In 1993, the Takitanis established their Foundation to express their gratitude to the local community for its support.
Its goal is to assist Hawaii students in achieving their educational and professional aspirations. This goal stems from the Takitanis’ desire to equip and inspire the next local generation of Hawaiians to be successful.
In fact, you may have already heard of this Foundation. In 2019, the Takitani Foundation gave $3,600,000 to the Culinary Institute of the Pacific’s confection studios. They awarded this sum to promote a new generation of Hawaii-based pastry chefs.
The Foundation has supported the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii. They also support The 13th Year Program at Honolulu Community College, among many other organizations.
So, how does this scholarship work?
How does the Takitani Scholarship work?
First, each qualifying high school selects an outstanding graduating senior. This senior will earn a $3,000 prize through the Takitani Foundation.
Then, Takitani chooses an additional finalist from each school district. This also includes Hawaii Catholic Schools and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools. These finalists are awarded an additional $2,000 grant.
Accredited schools with fewer than 100 students enrolled in grades 9-12 may also nominate a student. However, these schools are considered for one of two $3,000 scholarships. These two scholarships are set aside for students from schools with similar enrollment sizes.
Three exceptional students are chosen among the finalists for the following scholarships:
- Mamoru Takitani Outstanding Student Award $10,000
- Aiko Takitani Outstanding Student Award $10,000
- Karen Uno Distinguished Student Award $8,000
Who is Eligible for the Takitani Scholarship?
Student Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a graduating senior at an accredited Hawaii public, private, or parochial high school.
- Possess a solid academic achievement and potential record (GPA, SAT/ACT scores).
- Be an active participant in co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
- Participate in community service activities for a lengthy period of time.
- Eligible for undergraduate admission to an accredited/licensed business school, technical school, community college, or four-year college (there are no restrictions on the school’s location or field of study).
- Not be related to any Takitani Foundation Board Director or Director or Executive of Hawaiian Host.
- Provide evidence of your financial need.
